Alcatraz Island

I didn't really know much about Alcatraz before visiting it last weekend. In addition to being super creepy, it has a really interesting history.

The audio tour included descriptions of several escapes and escape attempts.  My favorite was the one in which a couple of prisoners dug their way through a concrete wall with SPOONS.  Spoons.

There was also a brief "Indian Occupation" of the island, in which Native Americans claimed the island as their own as a political statement about the sort of land Native Americans are usually "given" by the government.

Anyway, I certainly enjoyed it and would recommend a trip if you're ever in San Francisco!

  1. Wow, it looks super creepy!!! I've never been on the actual island, but I've seen it from the shore . . . It is weird how there was a prizon so close, yet so intact . . . Creppy for sure.
